This award-winning golf course, designed by the famous golf architect from the USA named Joseph Lee, opened in 1988. It is considered one of the top courses in Europe. According to the Top 100 Golf Courses of the World, it ranks second in the Algarve, third in Portugal, and twenty-third in the European Union. It was built in a figure eight shape on the Quinta do Lago estate, which borders the Ria Formosa bird sanctuary and estuary. It is characterized by gentle slopes mixed in with lagoons that are surrounded by pinewoods.
The fairways are Bermuda grass and the greens are in perfect condition. The fifth hole has the backdrop of the ocean beyond. The sixth, seventh, seventeenth, and eighteenth holes have water challenges. An astonishing 87% of Trip Advisor reviews from players give this course an excellent or very good rating.
Played San Lorenzo twice last week, on the first occasion the greens were fluffy and very slow though clearly this had been rectified on Saturday. Course itself remains one to play though having played Quinta North i would suggest the attention to detail re buggies needs looking at, at San Lorenzo where there is no GPS, towel, tees or drinks holder (with ice) compared to Quinta whose deliver is simply better. Nothing major really as this is potentially picky and all in all well worthy playing still
I had a nice golf holidays Algarve, we stayed at Dona Filipa and San Lorenzo golf resort. Played here on a beautiful April morning. Although not long this course is tough - water, tight drives etc. Course in great condition. Not cheap but deals available for €130 on line Buggy not required - easily walkable and an enjoyable experience.

|Pro Comment: Set away from the heart of the golfing area of the Algarve, is arguably the best course in the country and Europe. There are no weak holes here. The bunkers are amazing and a real trap. The PAR 5 are long and the PAR 3 demand long irons. The 13th and 14th are among the most interesting holes of the region. To finish your round is a long PAR 5 that will make the joy of the long hitters.|
